The Battle for Tuntenhaus I & II
Tuntenhaus – literally the “house of queers” – was a squat in East Berlin. Occupied by thirty gay men, it was a thriving community whose tranquillity was only threatened by the local gangs of neo-Nazis. This gritty documentary follows the fortunes of the Tuntenhaus through the dark days of anarchy and riots that followed German reunification to the sudden invasion of 3,000 West German police armed with tanks and tear gas in a massive operation to evict them. Two years on, director, Juliet Bashore returned to Berlin to track down the former members of the squat and find out where they have been and asking how their lives, loves and politics have been affected by the events in post-unification Germany?
